Here is Tina Hoggart’s statement:

“I’ve long struggled to be productive in both writing and illustration. When I got serious about creating books for young readers I attended SCBWI meetings and conferences, read craft books, prepared portfolios, volunteered with SCBWI WWA, and participated in critique groups. Five years ago I began the Masters In Writing for Children and Young Adults program at Hamline University, graduating two years later. All of it has helped make my work better, given me a supportive community, and centered me in my life.

But I still struggle to manage both disciplines. I want to write novels as well as write and illustrate picture books and that is a tall order. For over a decade I have needed a craft book that addresses the actual management of a dual practice. So I applied for a grant from 4Culture (King County’s cultural arts and heritage organization) to write a book proposal, got it, and for the last year have been interviewing author/illustrators on how they get their work done. When the pandemic came along strategies for surviving, and thriving, as a creative seemed more important than ever.

I’m excited to share some of what I’ve learned. We’ll talk about hard work, juggling projects, fear, joy, and ways to generate and deepen ideas. We’ll have fun. Bring a pencil and a few sheets of paper. We’ll be doing a little work, too.
