Craft your picture book in 4 Thursdays

Register for this online picture book class and turn your ideas into reality.

The Craft of Picture Book Writing is an online writing class ​Four Thursdays (Oct. 1st-Oct. 22nd) 
taught by Angela Dalton and Laura Atkins

This will be a 4-week workshop with a combination of lectures, discussion, sharing of ideas, writing prompts and homework – and by the end, you should have an in-development or complete and revised picture book manuscript. 

  • Class One: What Is a Picture Book?
  • Class Two: Plot and Character
  • Class Three: Tone, Voice and Language
  • Class Four: Revising and Editing
  • They will also offer an add-on manuscript critique. Details for this will be discussed at the end of the course.

About the teachers

Laura Atkins is an author and the founding editor of Manzanita Publishing. She spent seven years in the children’s publishing industry in the United States, working at Children’s Book Press, Orchard Books and Lee & Low Books. She taught at the University of Newcastle and Roehampton University. She is now based in Berkeley, California where she offers manuscript critiquing, mentoring and workshops. Laura holds an MA in Children’s Literature from the National Centre for Research in Children’s Literature (NCRCL) at Roehampton University in England and an MA in Writing For Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Angela Dalton was once a producer of online kids’ games and other cool things. She likes to think that she chose writing but, the truth is, writing chose her. Her first book, IF YOU LOOK UP TO THE SKY, published in 2018; and her forthcoming book RUBY’S REUNION DAY DINNER with HarperCollins comes out winter 2022. A member of SCBWI and the 12×12 Picture Book Challenge, she lives in Oakland, California where she spends her time looking up to the sky and writing the stories the universe inspires her to share.

The class costs $185 plus Eventbrite fees. There are 20 places total – five of which are reserved for sliding scale tickets.
