Join us on Saturday, November 9, from 12:30–5:00, for SCBWI Western Washington’s WRITE-ZONE. A KidLit Write-In & Sketch-In at Seattle Pacific University in Demaray Hall, 3307 3rd Ave. W., Seattle, WA 98119.
Join in on a community of writers & illustrators for an afternoon of creative productivity. We will have four blocks of uninterrupted time for you to work on your work-in-progress or start something new. You won’t want to miss this day designed to maximize progress, alongside your peers who will offer encouragement and lots of writing mojo.
The afternoon starts promptly at 12:30 pm. Each hour will start with a ten-minute quick-tip & inspiration led by one of our local SCBWI authors and illustrators. You will be inspired, learn something new all while working alongside your SCBWI buddies, new or old. Win fabulous prizes, share snacks and socialize with fellow writers.
Registration is only $20 for SCBWI International members (you must login to register) and $30 for non-members and includes door prizes, coffee, tea, other beverages, snacks and a unique opportunity to write or sketch within your KidLit community and learn from local SCBWI successes.
Since we have very limited time in between the meeting and the Write-Zone, a boxed lunch will be offered for additional purchase at time of registration.

Faculty Members
Donna Matney grew up in central California surrounded by agricultural and oil fields. As a child, rather than dealing with the regular dust devils, she preferred spending recess squirreled away in the janitor’s closet with a good book. Her favorite hobbies were calling dial-a-story over and over again, and sneaking into a restricted cemetery to weave her own spooky tales using the crumbling headstones as inspiration.
Donna’s Young Adult and Middle Grade books feature characters drawn into creepy, situations, melding history, folklore, and or her own life experience into reinvented storylines. She still dreams in Spanglish.
Donna lives in Washington State with her family, three dogs and two frogs. Donna’s backyard is a haunted 19th century logging camp. (The haunted part may or may not be true—she makes stuff up.) She is a Critique-Group-Coordinator for SCBWI-Western Washington and teaches “The Hero’s Journey for Young Authors” to future writers.

Ellie Peterson – Hi there! I’m a picture book author, illustrator, and science educator living in the Seattle area. My work is inspired by my experience teaching STEM, my upbringing as a biracial army brat, and my adventures in parenting.
My books actively encourage children to question HOW they know what they know. When I’m not in the lab, I enjoy experimenting with art supplies in my home studio and visiting other local schools.
BEA’S BEES, by Katherine Pryor is the first book I’ve illustrated through Schiffer Publishing, Ltd.
My second book, IT’S A ROUND, ROUND WORLD! kicks off my new series, The Joulia Copernicus Books and will be released September 3rd, 2019 through Kane Press. The next book in the series, THE REASON FOR THE SEASONS will come out Spring 2020.
I’m the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion coordinator for the Western Washington chapter of SCBWI and a member of The Broadstrokes, an all-female illustration critique group.
I’m represented by Adria Goetz of Martin Literary Management.

Faith Pray is a Pacific Northwest author-illustrator who regularly wrangles four kids and two kittens. After a stroke left her struggling with her writing words, she turned to art to find her way back to writing. She is passionate about books, literacy, and rainstorms. Her coffee cup is half-full.
Faith’s author-illustrator debut picture book THE STARKEEPER arrives from Random House in June 2020. She is also the illustrator of ONCE UPON A TIMELY by Lynn Parrish Sutton, published by Kane Miller books.

Dan Richards is a beloved children’s author known for his picture books THE PROBLEM WITH NOT BEING SCARED OF MONSTERS and CAN ONE BALLOON MAKE AN ELEPHANT FLY? and his middle school novels STU TRULY and STU TRULY FIRST KISS.
