Fall 2019 Events For Writers and Illustrators

For fall 2019, the SCBWI of Western Washington has planned a powerful batch of inspiring events. Our lineup will help you hone your writing and illustration skills, learn about the publishing business, and make new friends. All this can help reach your goal of being the best writer or illustrator you can be. Here’s a snapshot of some of our upcoming events.

Develop your characters

September 26th, 7pm-9pm – Register for a Character Workshop with Troy Cummings, in Weter Hall at Seattle Pacific University

Master the art of nonfiction

September 29th, 3pm-4:30pm – Q&A with Nonfiction Author Clare Hodgson Meeker, at Island Books, Mercer Island

October 12th, 10am-Noon – Professional Meeting Series with Don Tate, at the Central Library (SPL)

Take a master class with Don Tate

See the best of Washington State

October 12th, 7pm-8pm – Washington State Book Awards, at the Central Library (SPL) 

The Washington State Book Awards celebrate books that exemplify the best writing in the state. This year, finalists and winners will be celebrated in eight categories: fiction, poetry, biography/memoir, and history/general nonfiction for adults; picture books and early reader, middle grade, and young adult books. The 2019 awards are for books published in 2018.

All are invited to the awards ceremony (where winners will be announced) and reception. The awards celebration is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and signing. No need to register; just come to the Central Library. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Go on retreat

November 1-3 REGISTER NOW – Weekend on the Water Retreat (Whidbey Island, Nov 1st-3rd) SCBWI Western Washington’s 2019 Weekend on the Water: A Quintessential Creativity Sprint will be Nov. 1 – 3, 2019, on Whidbey Island. The retreat will focus on intense productivity but also feature critique opportunities and a webinar by executive editor Ruta Rimas. Take advantage of our lowest retreat pricing in years.

Your Passport admits you to all Professional Meeting Series meetings at an early-bird rate of $40 for SCBWI International members and $80 for non-members. SCBWI WWA is also pleased to offer both SCBWI Membership and Western Washington Passport Series scholarships to those who might otherwise find it difficult to afford membership or our Professional Series meetings.
